The Early Gigs: Dates
Carlo kept a detailed log of all his early gigs and how much he was paid, recorded in an invoice book from May 1961. He was paid in old English pounds and shillings. You can see from the amount of gigs and travelling that The Savages must have been one of the hardest working bands on the circuit at the time. Venues are unknown but if anyone knows, please email.

*Carlo officially did this gig with Cyril Davies All Stars but also deputised as drummer with The Stones, who were the interval band
** According to some sources, Carlo played this gig with The Stones but he did not list it in his payments book
*** Country Line Special/Chicago Calling single
**** Audition for BBC radio
***** 'The 6.25 Show', BBC
****** 'Hullabaloo' show, ITV
******* 'Thank Your Lucky Stars'
******** 'Saturday Club' radio show on BBC. Was broadcast 5 days later on 6th July 1963 and presented by Brian Matthews. The band played numbers that were "typical of what we were doing at club gigs, but in shortened versions", according to Keith Scott in a letter to this website, "as the attention span of the average Saturday Club listener was short and sharp, especially through their portable trannies". A rare home-taped recording of this radio programme reveals the Saturday Club numbers as:
- See See Rider, guest vocals Long John Baldry
- Chicago Calling
- Country Line Special
- Roberta, guest vocals Long John Baldry
- Roll 'em Pete

********* The boat was the MV Royal Sovereign
********** Recording with Casey Jones & The Savages, demo of single 'One Way Ticket'. See discography for more info.
*********** The October Tamworth gig was not listed in Carlo's book for some reason, but a record of it exists here and in Tamworth Herald 01/11/63  newspaper cutting which says: "FANTASTIC - that was the runaway verdict of a poll taken on Monday night after Screaming Lord Sutch had brought the house down at Tamworth's Assembly Rooms... The Savages consists of Paul Redman on piano - he played with one hand because he had hurt his shoulder two days earlier - Ricky Fensen on bass, drummer Carlo Savage - the group was named after him - and lead guitar Stuart 'Daffodil' Taylor." (Stuart Taylor left the Savages in Dec 1963 to join The Tornados).
************ Carlo didn't make this gig. The Savages broke down on the M1 and were replaced by local group The Three Spirits.
